EU Proposes Two Options for Printed Food Contact Measure

On 13, July 2017, the commission’s health directorate (DG Sante) exposited two credible options for an EU measure on food contact materials (FCMs), which aims to ensure the printing inks are within acceptable limits. These two options are based on meeting of directorate working group on FCMs. It is said that an EU measure expects to be in place by mid-2018.

EU Amending RoHS Exemptions

Swedish Chemical Agency (Kemi) has conducted a consultation on its proposal to restrict medium-chained chlorinated paraffins(MCCP) since October 2015. On August 15, 2017, 14 ministries, involving Ministry of Environmental protection of the people’s Republic of China, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine and General Administration of Customs, jointly issued the No.38 announcement about the effectiveness of Minamata Convention on Mercury (hereafter referred to as simply Mercury Regulation). Mercury Regulation would come into force on August 16, 2017.

In accordance with the General Product Safety Directive 2001/95/EC (GPSD) and Regulation 765/2008, in July 2017 the European Commission validated 167 notifications1 on dangerous products and transmitted them to the Member States (EU Member States and EEA-EFTA countries Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway). Most of these concerned products presenting serious risk: 148 notifications (89%). 14 notifications (8%) concerned products presenting less than serious risk and 5 notifications (3%) were circulated for information.

General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of the People's Republic of China (AQSIQ) validated notifications on 76 batches of imported industrial goods, which were found non-compliant during inspection and quarantine process at the entry ports of China. They have not been offered for sale on the China market yet and are re-dispatched or destroyed instead according to laws.
