The term Flame retardants subsumes a diverse group of chemicals which are added to manufactured materials, such as plastics and textiles, and surface finishes and coatings. Flame retardants inhibit or delay the spread of fire by suppressing the chemical reactions in the flame or by the formation of a protective layer on the surface of a material to enhance its fire resistance. However, flame retardants may result in lower birth rate, congenital malformation of newborns, decline in children's intelligence and hormone disruption due to their toxicity. It also poses risks to the environment and human health as some can bioaccumulate or are hard to degrade.
Both Reactive and Additive Flame retardants types, can be further separated into the categories as below:
Minerals. (ATH, MDH, huntite and hydromagnesite, various hydrates, red phosphorus, and boron compounds, mostly borates)
Organohalogen compounds. (organochlorines, organobromines, polymeric brominated compounds and halogenated flame retardants)
Organophosphorus compounds. (organophosphates, phosphonates and phosphinates)
EU and many states in US have issued bills to restrict the use of flame retardants in children's products along with the knowledge of the developmental toxicity, endocrine disruption and reproductive toxicity that may arise from such substances.
